MAIN FEATURE: System solutions for hydraulic structures – Robust, cost-effective, durable
Locks, storm surge barriers and ship lifts are among the most demanding hydraulic structures. They safeguard trade routes, protect coastal regions against flooding and ensure the reliable operation of major waterways. At the same time, they are exposed to extreme stresses: water, chlorides, freeze-thaw cycles, abrasion, fluctuating water levels and high mechanical loads affect the concrete and reinforcement over decades. Many of these structures were built several decades ago and now need to be repaired or modernised without compromising their essential function. MC-Bauchemie provides system solutions worldwide for the construction, protection and repair of hydraulic structures of this kind. Its portfolio ranges from concrete technology, concrete replacement and sprayed concrete to surface protection and injection systems. Read more about this in our current issue of MC aktiv, starting on page 8.
BIG PICTURE: Concrete technology for mega projects
Since 2022, MC-BIFI Bauchemie has been supporting Vinhomes in the development of large-scale urban districts across Vietnam. Projects such as Mega Grand World near Hanoi, Vinhomes Royal Island and Vinhomes Ocean Park 2 & 3 combine residential, commercial and leisure facilities to create integrated urban developments. To meet demanding construction schedules, high temperatures and long transport routes, MC-BIFI provides customised concrete technology solutions, project-specific mix designs and comprehensive technical support. You can find out more about these projects in our Big Picture or in the detailed report on our website.
INNOVATION & INSPIRATION
We once again present new products and technologies. These include MC-DUR TopSpeed flex plus, the new OS 11a system for trafficked concrete surfaces, MC-DUR 1321 flex, a crack-bridging and wear-resistant epoxy resin for OS 8 systems, the new specialist coating ombran BlackShield for heavy-duty separator systems, and Murasan Hydrotech 860 plus, a mould-filling aid for the production of concrete products made from semi-dry concrete. In our Inspiration section, we take a closer look at retaining walls, which are permanently exposed to stress from moisture, freeze-thaw cycles and other environmental influences, yet have often been overlooked in maintenance planning. We show how coordinated repair and surface protection systems can help preserve these critical infrastructure structures over the long term.
BEST PRACTICE: Projects, projects, projects
In our ‘Best Practice’ section, we once again present a selection of recent projects: from the refurbishment of the Travnik Sports Hall in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the rehabilitation of the Liberec Tunnel in the Czech Republic to the waterproofing of the Plitvice Holiday Resort in Croatia and the surface protection of a new underground car park in Ingolstadt, Germany. These projects highlight MC’s expertise in concrete repair, waterproofing and surface protection, demonstrating how coordinated system solutions help ensure durable, reliable and sustainable infrastructure under a wide range of demanding conditions.
FOCUS ON SUSTAINABILITY: New impetus
In our ‘Sustainability’ section, we report on two important developments in the field of sustainability. We present the MC Energy project, which is driving energy efficiency at MC through technical optimisation, renewable energy and organisational measures to reduce energy consumption, costs and CO₂ emissions. We also highlight the first official Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) in Germany for approved cement-free concrete, marking another significant step towards more sustainable construction.
As always, we round off our issue with internal topics, profiles and personnel news.
