MAIN FEATURE: Rethinking multi-storey car parks – durable, sustainable, customisable
Multi-storey car parks are a true stress test for coating systems. Hardly any other area of use combines so many requirements for function, protection and design: mechanical loads from vehicle traffic, temperature fluctuations, moisture, chloride ingress, UV exposure and strict safety standards call for durable and technically sophisticated systems. This multitude of technical and design requirements shows that car parks cannot be built according to a standard template. Each facility poses unique challenges in terms of construction, use and design. MC-Bauchemie provides a complete range of internationally proven car park coating solutions – from standard to high-end systems – and demonstrates with the new MC-DUR TopSpeed flex plus surface protection system how sustainability and performance can be perfectly combined. Read more about this in our current issue of MC aktiv, starting on page 8.
BIG PICTURE: Silvertown tunnel in London set new standards
With the opening of the new Silvertown Tunnel in April 2025, London reached an important milestone in its urban infrastructure. The 1.4 km long twin-bore tunnel beneath the River Thames connects Silvertown with the Greenwich Peninsula and ensures smoother traffic flow in the eastern part of the city. For surface protection, the construction consortium Riverlinx chose the high-performance coating MC-Color T 21 from MC-Bauchemie. Applied in white as the main coating over an area of 22,400 m², as well as in green and orange to mark safety routes and emergency exits, the system’s easy application allowed completion within just one month. MC-Color T 21 impressed with numerous properties specifically tailored to the demands of tunnel construction. You can find out more about this project in our Big Picture or in the detailed report on our website.
INNOVATION & INSPIRATION
In our current issue, we once again present new products and technologies. These include Nafuquick eCO2 and Emcefix F eCO2, two sustainable concrete fillers that not only offer significant CO₂ reductions but also impress with their quality and meet the current requirements, as well as the climate-friendly reactive waterproofing compound MC-Proof 800 Next with a reduced carbon footprint, Emicode EC1 PLUS certification and sustainable packaging. Another highlight is ombran MHP fine: with this fine-grained variant, MC is expanding the ombran MHP product family with a product that impresses with its optimised processing properties and a versatile range of applications in the wastewater sector. In our ‘Inspiration’ section, we also present two current projects from Budapest in which aesthetically appealing, durable and functional design terrazzo surfaces were created using MC’s floor coating systems.
BEST PRACTICE: Projects, projects, projects
In our ‘Best Practice’ section, we once again present a selection of recent projects: from the use of high-quality coating systems at the MTK Sports Park in Budapest to the comprehensive modernisation of a cement plant for climate-neutral production in France and the revitalisation of a surface protection system for an industrial chimney in Slovakia to the renovation of the iconic Copan building complex in São Paulo and the construction of Romania's longest cable-stayed bridge. All of these projects once again demonstrate MC's extensive expertise and passion, as well as its high-performance product systems.
FOCUS ON SUSTAINABILITY: New impetus
In our ‘Sustainability’ section, we report on an educational project in Africa and Asia to improve quality of construction, which MC implemented from 2021 to early 2025 as part of the develoPPP funding programme of the German Investment and Development Society (DEG) and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). We also take a look at the Sustainability Congress of the German Association for Small and Medium-sized Businesses (BVMW), which took place at the beginning of September at MC’s Training Centre in Bottrop and was hosted by MC's sister company Botament GmbH.
As always, we round off our issue with internal topics, profiles and personnel news.
