MAIN FEATURE: Specialised systems for tunnelling and mining – Proven, safe, economical
Tunnelling and mining projects are among the most challenging construction projects worldwide. They are carried out in areas where infrastructure is being developed, new transport corridors are being created, or raw materials must be extracted under challenging geological conditions. Underground engineering expertise, machine technology, and materials science address the unknown head-on: changing rock strata, mixed-face conditions, high water pressures, temperature variations, clogging, abrasion, and vibration. In these cases, it is highly beneficial to use the system solutions provided by MC Underground (MCU), a specialised underground unit within MC-Bauchemie. MCU covers all technologies, ranging from TBM tunnelling and conventional
excavation to mining. Read more about this in our current issue of MC aktiv, starting on page 8.
BIG PICTURE: Floor refurbishment at hebro®chemie
Between January 2024 and January 2025, the production area at hebro®chemie in Mönchengladbach underwent extensive refurbishment. hebro®chemie was the client, and IMA Moers was responsible for the planning. A specialist contractor carried out the work in close consultation with MC-Bauchemie. The particular challenge was that all work had to be carried out while production was ongoing. As well as adhering to a tight schedule, the Project required the fulfilment of highly technical specifications, including defined crack-bridging classes in accordance with AwSV*. You can find out more about this project in our Big Picture or in the detailed report on our website.
INNOVATION & INSPIRATION
In our current issue, we once again present new products and technologies. These include the new self-levelling coating for permanently colourfast floors MC-DUR 2060 UV flow, the new water protection coating
MC-DUR
ChemProtect and a new all-purpose hydrophobisation Emcephob L pro, a solvent-free, aqueous, silane-based water-repellent. Another highlight is the release agent Ortolan GeCo2 330 for climate-friendly concrete. In our ‘Inspiration’ section, we take a closer look at the topic ‘When conventional strengthening reaches its limits: Retrofitting structural components with CFRP’. This is because many concrete structures such as bridges, parking garages, and residential or commercial buildings were originally designed for loads and uses that have long since been exceeded.
BEST PRACTICE: Projects, projects, projects
In our ‘Best Practice’ section, we once again present a selection of recent projects: from soil stabilisation for a cultural heritage in Gradačac to self-regulating corrosion protection for the cooling tower in Rostock and the efficient tunnel coating of the Wihalden Tunnel in the Canton of St. Gallen to the high-quality fair-faced concrete for a spa at the Jakobsberg Nature Resort and the industrial floor installation for the wine cellar of Cave du Roi Dagobert in France. All of these projects once again demonstrate MC's extensive expertise and passion, as well as its high-performance product systems.
FOCUS ON SUSTAINABILITY: New impetus
In our ‘Sustainability’ section, we report about sustainable release agents. Because sustainability is becoming increasingly important in concrete production. In addition to cement, aggregates, and admixtures, functional auxiliaries such as concrete release agents are coming into focus. Modern, low-emission Systems make an important contribution to quality, occupational safety, and environmental protection on construction sites, and are being requested by more and more clients.
As always, we round off our issue with internal topics, profiles and personnel news.
