Comprehensive concrete repair for a road tunnel in Liberec
Czech Republic
The Liberec Tunnel on the Czech I/35 trunk road is an important transport link within the city of Liberec. As part of a comprehensive rehabilitation project, the tunnel tubes, portal walls, and load-bearing structural elements were repaired. MC supported the project with high-performance repair and coating systems.

The Liberec Tunnel forms part of the city’s main central traffic artery and is located in the immediate vicinity of Liberec’s main railway station and central bus station. The structure consists of two one-way tunnel tubes, measuring 280 m and 240 m in length respectively, each with two traffic lanes. The rehabilitation work was carried out from March to December 2025. The client was Ředitelství silnic a dálnic s. p., the Road and Motorway Directorate of the Czech Republic. Construction was performed by EUROVIA CZ a.s. as the general contractor and FREYSSINET CS a.s. as the specialist contractor responsible for the repair work.
Challenging substrate preparation due to existing coating
A structural survey identified various types of damage. These included cracks in the concrete, corrosion damage to the reinforcement, spalling of the concrete cover, and moisture ingress in walls and beams. Before the actual rehabilitation work began, several test areas were prepared to assess the condition of the existing structure and verify the effectiveness of the proposed methods. Removing the original tunnel coating proved particularly challenging, as it was extremely resistant. To achieve the required substrate quality, the coating ultimately had to be removed completely by abrasive blasting. Following substrate preparation, various MC products were used for concrete repair and surface protection.
Repair using a coordinated MC system
The fibre-reinforced, highly sulphate-resistant PCC/SPCC concrete replacement mortar Nafufill KM 250 HS was used for the coarse reprofiling of damaged concrete areas. Fine reprofiling was then carried out using Nafufill KM 110 HS, which was also applied over large areas to level the tunnel surfaces. MC-DUR 111 was applied to the fully prepared surfaces as a durable protective coating in a bright and welcoming light-yellow shade, RAL 1016. The coating not only provides reliable protection for the tunnel interior surfaces and portal walls against moisture, environmental exposure, and further concrete damage, but also ensures good visibility and creates a more pleasant driving environment. MC-Color Flex vision in light grey, RAL 7035, was additionally used in the escape-route areas. The system was primed with MC-Color Primer.
Long-term protection for the decades ahead
MC-Bauchemie provided extensive support to its project partner FREYSSINET CS from the tendering phase onwards. The technical consultancy, comprehensive preliminary trials, and provision of all required test certificates and approvals proved particularly convincing. The resulting repair and protection concept provides long-term protection for the concrete structure of the Liberec Tunnel and makes a major contribution to ensuring its continued use for decades to come.
