Pressure from below, protection from above

As part of the construction of a new underground car park in Ingolstadt, approximately 11,000 m² of parking surfaces were coated with MC-Bauchemie’s high-performance OS 14 MC-DUR 2211 MB surface protection system.

MC’s OS 14 system protects underground car park in Ingolstadt

Deutschland

A new underground car park has been built on Furtwänglerstraße in Ingolstadt. To provide long-term protection for the approximately 11,000 m² parking area, MC-Bauchemie’s OS 14 MC-DUR 2211 MB surface protection system was selected. The system delivers reliable performance even in conditions of high groundwater.

Multi-storey and underground car parks are exposed to severe stresses. Vehicle traffic, thrust and shear forces, moisture, freeze-thaw cycles, and chlorides from de-icing salts continuously attack the building structure. The construction of the new underground car park on Furtwänglerstraße in Ingolstadt presented an additional challenge. Due to the permanently high groundwater level of 3 to 5 m, hydrostatic pressure from behind the surfaces to be coated had to be expected. The resulting pressure of approximately 0.3 to 0.5 bar placed particular demands on the coating system and its verified resistance.

Tested system solution for hydrostatic pressure from behind

The solution was provided by MC’s OS 14 MC-DUR 2211 MB system. In addition to meeting the relevant standard requirements, the system was tested for crack bridging across cracks ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 mm while simultaneously withstanding hydrostatic pressure from behind of up to 2.5 bar. This gave the project stakeholders a reliable solution for an application for which no standardised procedure has yet been defined in the existing regulations.

The system build-up starts with the epoxy resin MC-DUR 1320 VK, which is used as a primer and can also be applied as an optional scratch coat. This is followed by MC-DUR 2211 MB, a highly flexible polyurethane resin that acts as a crack-bridging intermediate layer. The broadcast layer is produced using the polyurethane resin MC-DUR 2210 and is fully blinded with quartz sand. Finally, the surface is sealed with MC-DUR 1322. The result is a durable, mechanically resilient, and permanently protective system build-up for trafficked surfaces.

High durability in car park operation

In addition to its resistance to hydrostatic pressure from behind, the system impressed with its high mechanical performance. This is demonstrated by the results of the Parking Abrasion Test (PAT) and Driving Abrasion Test (DAT). In the particularly demanding PAT, which is now also covered by standards, the system was rated as having “high wear resistance” after 15,000 cycles. This rating was maintained even after more than 35,000 simulated parking manoeuvres.

OS 14 MC-DUR 2211 MB therefore combines two key properties that are essential for underground car parks: reliable crack bridging and high resistance to mechanical stress. In addition to meeting all other standard requirements, the system also withstands significant temperature fluctuations, frost, and outdoor weathering.

Convincing results

The coating work was carried out from July to November 2025 over an area of approximately 11,000 m². In Ingolstadt, OS 14 MC-DUR 2211 MB provided a tested, high-performance system that offers a reliable solution even under demanding conditions involving high groundwater levels. The result is a convincing solution for an application for which no standardised procedure has yet been defined in the existing regulations.
